The Neuroscience
Mental load can be alleviated by creating new habits

The prefrontal cortex is the part of your brain where decisions are made and mental load resides. It can only handle so much at any given time. But we can alleviate the pressure on this area by making decisions more automatic (i.e., create new habits that don’t require you to think as much). This is because habits are stored in a different part of your brain – the basal ganglia. Once something becomes a habit, your prefrontal cortex can quiet itself and focus on more important things.

Changing habits is about changing routines

Each habit is comprised of three components – a cue, routine, and reward. A cue triggers a routine, which in turn leads to a reward. To change a habit, research shows that you cannot alter the cue or the reward component of the habit loop. It’s about finding an alternative routine. 



Changing habits is about finding the real source of cravings

To overpower an existing habit, it’s important to determine which craving is driving your behavior. Otherwise, you won’t be targeting the real underlying issue. For example – are you overeating because you’re actually hungry, or is it because you’re bored, lonely, or stressed?




Changing habits is about accountability

There is power in groups and shared experiences.  It’s tough to make changes on your own, in isolation. Your odds of success go up dramatically when in a group setting (even if it’s just two people).
